The R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home was established in 1839 by Judge James H. Edgerly, great-great-grandfather of the former owner. Judge Edgerly was born in Farmington in 1811, it was there where he learned the craft of carriage-making. In 1839, he moved to Rochester and opened a carriage-making business and a large-scale undertaking business. After being appointed judge for Strafford County Superior Court in 1866, Judge Edgerly gave the carriage company to his son Thomas H. Edgerly, and past down the undertaking business to his son Royal M. Edgerly.
James H. Edgerly was succeeded by his son Royal M. Edgerly and later by his son J. Hervey Edgerly who was at one time was the proud owner of the only complete Colt gun collection in the world. In 1969, the funeral home was turned over to Royal M. "Rolly" Edgerly Sr. and his brother, the late James H. Edgerly, Jr. For the past 30 years, J. Susan Edgerly, former President and Morgan J. Edgerly, former Vice President, have operated the firm which is still in its original location. Five generations have proudly served the Rochester and surrounding area for 180 years, making it the oldest funeral home in New Hampshire.
